Sympathy Extended

We extend sympathy to the family of Mary Thomas Burton Dennis who passed away. Mary Tom, as she was known, was our oldest alumnus, graduating with the Class of 1927. She was a very young 102.
 
 
DENNIS, Mary Thomas Burton, born April 7, 1907 in Sharon, TN, and died on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at home. Preceded in death by husband, Roy Jones Dennis. Survivors include nieces and nephews – Jim (Linda) Burton of Franklin, Mary Burton (Bill) Goodin of Batesville, AR, Elizabeth Burton (Pat) Waggoner of Nashville, Walter (Heidi) Burton of Tipp City, OH and their families. She received her education at Sharon public schools, Freed-Hardeman College, and George Peabody College. She taught math for ten years in Senath and Arbyrd, MO. She lived in Sharon from 1939 to 1968 where she was involved in many activities including the Weakley County Library Board, Woodlawn Cemetery Association and Girl Scout’s. Mrs. Dennis with her mother wrote the Sharon news from 1924 until 1968 for the Weakley County Press. Mrs. Dennis married in 1968 and moved to Nashville where she was an active member of Granny White Church of Christ. In 1983, she organized and served as first president of the Jean Pierre Bondurant Chapter of the Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia. She served as president and treasurer of the Tennessee Branch and a 2nd vice-president of the National. She was a member and registrar of the Campbell chapter, Daughter of the American Revolution, and belonged to the Thomas Lygon Chapter of Colonial Dames of the 17th century. Other organizations included American Association of University Women, Gran-Timers, Gourmet Club, Magna Carta Dames and Docent of The Governer’s Residence. Funeral services will be conducted by John Parker on Thursday, October 1, 2009 10:00 AM, with visitation Wednesday from 3-7 PM, at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home, 660 Thompson Lane, Nashville. Honorary pallbearers will be elders and deacons of Granny White Church of Christ. Family and friends will serve as active pallbearers, graveside service to follow at 3:30 PM, Thursday in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sharon TN.
